Nabe means pot. This dish is shared with family and friends in the middle of the table. It is usually enjoyed in the colder winter months. Seafood, chicken, Tofu, and vegetable are cooked in a broth. The skin and bones of the seafood and chicken are melted into a gelatinous delicious mixture, which enhances this dish.
The shell of the crab, shrimp, and clams make the broth ever more tasty. Vegetable tends to sweeten in broth. These are usually dipped in a ponzu sauce (soy based sauce) and garnished with green onions and grated Japanese radish. At the end of the meal, rice is added to the broth to make a porridge. These dishes are very unique in taste and nutritious. There are many different types of nabe as shown in the pictures.
